AMD Goes Energy Friendly With Their Six-Core Opterons

AMD six core Opteron

The general rule of thumb has been that the more cores you add to a processor the more energy it will use up, just don’t clue AMD in on that fact.

The company has released a batch of four new Six-core Opterons designed for 2, 4, and 8 processor machines. The AMD Opteron 8425 HE (2.1GHz, 4-8 way capable), 2439 HE, 2425 HE, and 2423 HE (2.8GHz, 2.1GHz, 2.0GHz, 2 CPU system capable)  promises up to 18% better performance-per-watt compared to their older quad-core chips which would make it a natural choice for an upgrade, should your current servers support it of course, or flat out new server purchases.

I don’t know about you but lower heat output, lower cooling costs, the obvious virtualization benefits, and improved performance make this series of chips a winner.
